Working Groups

The IndigeLab Network coordinates Working Groups for its core membership. The outputs of each group can be found under the Resources or Publications menus, and when they host public workshops or events, these will be listed on the News & Blog section of the website.

Publication Working Group

Peer reviewed publications make our jobs go round and are crucial for promotion, tenure, and raises. Thus, the IndigeLab Network Publication Working Group offers two forms of support for member’s publication goals. First, when a member of IN has a publication at any stage (idea vetting, rough outline, single data viz, full draft, etc), they can ask for group feedback. We’ll put a call out to the Network for people best suited to support their project. Second, we can provide support via Senior Authors from within the network. If you are creating a publication and would like a senior scholar to be a supporting co-author, they can provide ongoing guidance on making strong arguments, choosing journals, negotiating peer review and with editors, and the overall publication process. For either kind of support, please contact Veronica.

This working group is based on a similar group in the Collaboratory for Indigenous Data Governance run by Stephanie Carroll.

Building Labs Working Group

Hosted by Dr.Max Liboiron

The Building Labs Working Group supports Indigenous leaders and researchers to build research spaces. We focus on the creation and ongoing maintenance of values-based, justice-oriented, and/or homeland-serving research spaces. Formed in the summer of 2024, this group includes Indigenous research spaces in academia, health care/hospitals, and non-profits.

Indigenous Art as a Method Working Group

Hosted by Mukhtara Ay?t?jú Adékúnbi Yusuf

Indigenous art as a method group is for Indigenous labs and lab members exploring art as a method. This exploration may take the form of hosting artists and residencies in their labs, or seeking to support, enable and amplify indigenous arts and technologies (for example, weaving, beading, sound healing) through their labs and lab resources. The working group is exploring critical questions such as: how do we conceptualize and define indigenous art and  what methods exist and/or can be cultivated to support indigenous arts as legible technologies.

Indigenous Quantitative Methods Working Group

Hosted by Dr. Max Liboiron

The Indigenous Quantitative Methods Working Group considers questions of different Indigenous values, ways of knowing, and research priorities in our quantitative research. Formed in 2022, the group is mainly Indigenous researchers with some allied non-Indigenous students from our labs. We have covered topics such as using our home languages to describe quantitative thought, the practice and theory of circular statistics, and most recently we support one another in ongoing projects. We have a public library of readings on Indigenous quantitative methods.

Primarily White Institutions Working Group

Hosted by Dr. Kat Milligan-McClellan

There are very few Indigenous people in academia. Because academia is predominantly white, many of the Institutions that Indigenous people work at are Primarily White Institutions (PWIs). These can be isolating places to work as Indigenous people for many reasons. In this group, we will discuss our roles, impact, and ways of coping as Indigenous people on PWI campuses. We will listen to each other when we are able, offer support and guidance to the best of our abilities, and discuss issues that we face at PWIs.

Student/Lab Assistant Mixer

Hosted by Veronica Madsen

The Student/Lab Assistant Mixer was created to foster connections and build networks within the IndigeLab Network community. This event provides a platform for students and lab assistants to learn about the various labs involved, exchange support, discuss their academic journeys, and explore future aspirations

Environmental Data and Indigenous Data Sovereignty

Hosted by Dr. M Murphy and Fernanda Yanchapaxi Travez

Lab Manager/Coordinator working group

Hosted by Andrew Martinez and Veronica Madsen
